About the Health Services Branch
The City's Health Service Branch conducts pre-employment and periodic physical examinations; Occupational Safety and Health mandated examinations including active hearing conservation program, active respiratory protection program, and other required screening programs; and oversees programs that are designed to reduce health risks and prevent injury. This is for everyone in the City and County of Honolulu and applicants.

How do I get an appointment for a physical examination?
Physical examinations are required before employment for certain positions. If you are offered a job that has a pre-employment physical examination requirement, you will be notified by the hiring department after a conditional offer of employment is made to you. The hiring department will then schedule an appointment for you with our office. Because it is necessary to ensure that proper hiring procedures have taken place before a physical examination is scheduled, appointments may not be made directly but must be made by designated officials in the hiring department.
What if I need to reschedule my appointment for a physical exam?
If you are unable to make a pre-employment physical examination as scheduled, call the department that scheduled the examination for you.
Can I go to my own physician for my physical examination?
Yes. The Rules of the Director allow for individuals to be examined by their own physician, however, the City's designated physician will make the final determination regarding an individual's medical fitness for duty. Even if you go to your own physician for your physical examination, you will still be required to complete the City's forms.
Does the City require a drug test for employment?
Yes. The City requires a drug test before being hired and for certain positions, periodic drug testing is also required.
Why do I need a physical examination to work for the City?
A physical examination is required for certain positions to assure that you are medically and physically able to perform the duties of the job.
Can the physical examination be conducted if I have a cold?
If you have a cold/flu involving chest congestion and/or coughing, please call the department that scheduled you for your physical and ask them to reschedule your appointment.
How do I know if I pass the physical examination?
The determination of medical fitness will be made after the City's designated physician reviews the physical examination data. The City department that scheduled you for the pre-employment physical examination will contact you once the medical and any other pre-employment evaluations are completed.
If it is determined that you are medically unfit to perform the essential functions of the job, you will be notified by the Department of Human Resources. If you are deemed medically disqualified for the position, you will be given the reason and offered an opportunity to provide other evidence of your medical fitness.
Do I need to fast for my physical?
No, you do not need to fast before your physical examination.
What will be tested in the physical examination?
A general physical examination will be conducted to include measurement of your height, weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, etc. For some physical examinations an EKG (electrocardiogram) or PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) may be required.
