EMS Response
Honolulu's Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians respond and provide emergency medical treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In 2023, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services (EMS) received more than 124,000 911 emergency calls, responded to more than 95,000 calls and transported more than 55,000 patients to local emergency rooms.
The City and County of Honolulu has 22 EMS ambulance units under four districts. All EMS ambulance units are designated as advanced life support (ALS) units, meaning they are staffed by at least one paramedic. Mobile Intensive Care Technicians (MICT) are trained and authorized to perform advanced life support and invasive medical techniques. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) are trained in basic life support. To maintain their licenses from the State of Hawaiʻi Board of Medical Examiners, paramedics must attend at least 60 hours of retraining and continuing medical education courses every two years.
Co-Response
Honolulu EMS works closely with other emergency responders to provide high-quality pre-hospital patient care. Ocean and land rescues are coordinated between the City and County of Honolulu’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services, EMS, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD).
